Premier Inn had been using a traditional lightweight steel frame bathroom pod system relying on plasterboard and traditional tiling. With three prestigious hotels committed across London's main airports, the hotelier's existing supply route could no longer guarantee continuity and could not offer a hot welded steel solution.

The contractor approached Walker Modular in 2010 to investigate the hot welded bathroom pod solution and its speed of delivery. Central to the contract was a bespoke welded steel framed bathroom pod with a tanked wall system around the bathing area.

A team of four specialists covered product design, technical development, project and service management. The bathroom walls were tanked in a waterproof membrane, with tiles adhered using a swimming pool flexible grout and tile adhesive so they would not delaminate during transport and installation.

The frames were manufactured and Walker Modular began supplying bathroom pods in 2011 at a rate of 50 per week, delivering all 1,500 pods on time and in full.

Delivering 1,500 pods at 50 per week for three simultaneous airport hotels established Walker Modular as a continuity-of-supply partner for national hotel operators — experience the company continues to draw on across its hotel work.
