Unite PLC first approached Walker Modular in 2010 to investigate the company's bathroom pod innovations and their potential use in new student accommodation developments. Central to the contract was a bespoke Marine Grade Composite bathroom pod produced from a one-piece moulded design.

A team of four specialists was assigned to the project, covering product design, technical development, project and service management. The first task was a bathroom pod manufactured as a true one-piece design that did not rely on a silicone jointing system, with a self-cleaning surface to reduce the morning turnaround cleaning regime.

Once the mould was agreed, the interior was upgraded using Ideal Standard fittings, and a bespoke granite effect wall panelling system was developed — also self-cleaning — to maintain the look and feel Unite required. The moulds were manufactured and Walker Modular began supplying bathroom pods in 2012.

Unite PLC dramatically cut the cleaning regime of its student accommodation bathrooms, and mould and discolouration were eliminated from the new bathrooms.

Challenges

What the project needed to solve.

  • 01

Existing lightweight steel frame pods relied on plasterboard and traditional tiling.

  • 02

Tiles had discoloured, suffered age related issues and were a challenge to maintain to brand standards.

  • 03

The replacement pod had to be self-cleaning, support infection control and need little or no maintenance.

Historic significance

The start of long-term student sector experience.

The Unite PLC programme established Walker Modular's one-piece composite pod in purpose-built student accommodation, a sector the company has continued to serve at scale ever since.
