Walker Modular will begin production on the £17m job in August to revamp the run down former Co-operative department store in Newcastle city centre to create a mixed-use scheme including leisure facilities, retail units and a Premier Inn Hotel.
The total scheme is valued in excess of £30m with the construction contract worth £17m. Premier Inn will operate the 184 bed hotel at the site when the refurbishment programme is completed by December 2015.
The Grade II listed art deco building extends to nearly 170,000 sq ft over six floors and has been a feature of the city’s skyline since it opened in the 1930s.
