GRP or steel framed bathroom pods: which system is right for your project?

Because we manufacture both systems, the specification conversation can start with the project rather than the product. Here is how the two compare.

Steel framed Walker Modular bathroom pod with tiled interior

Introduction

Manufacturers who make one type of pod tend to recommend that type of pod. Walker Modular manufactures both one-piece GRP and steel framed systems, so the question we start with is what the project needs — repetition and integrated waterproofing, or bespoke architectural finish.

Both are engineered to the same standards of factory control and inspection. They simply solve different specification problems.

One-piece GRP

The GRP system is a moulded enclosure in which the walls and floor form a continuous waterproof structure. It suits projects where the same bathroom is repeated many times and where minimising interfaces is a priority.

Consider GRP where priorities include

  • High repeatability across many identical bathrooms
  • Integrated waterproof construction with minimal joints
  • High-volume manufacture and predictable output
  • Durability under intensive daily use
  • Efficient, fast installation on site

Steel framed

The steel framed system is built around an engineered steel structure that carries a conventionally finished interior. It gives the design team far more freedom over materials, tiling and layout while retaining the benefits of factory manufacture.

Consider steel framed where priorities include

  • Bespoke finishes selected by the design team
  • Fully tiled interiors
  • Architectural flexibility in layout and geometry
  • Premium specification and guest-facing environments
  • Greater customisation of the finished bathroom

How the decision is usually made

In practice the choice follows the brief. A large student or Build to Rent scheme with a repeated room type usually favours GRP. A hotel or premium residential scheme where the bathroom is part of the brand experience usually favours steel framed.

Mixed schemes are common too — a repeated core bathroom type in GRP alongside steel framed pods for accessible, feature or penthouse rooms.

Get the choice made early

Whichever system is selected, the value of offsite manufacture depends on fixing the design early enough for the factory to do what it does best. The earlier the specification conversation happens, the more programme and coordination benefit the project captures.
